About The Rod Builder
Ben Casarez
Born into a family of fishermen, I became immersed in the art of angling at a young age. By age 10, I was spending my summer days chasing bass and bluegill with a fly rod on the ponds and streams of our family place in Blanco County, Texas. My interest in fly fishing progressed quickly from learning to cast, to fly tying and eventually to rod building. I built my first rod, a Sage RPLX +, in 1997 in preparation for a trip to Slough Creek. As a self-taught rod builder, I finished several rods over the next few years before meeting a great mentor and teacher. Under the watchful eye of Mike Munoz, I learned many of the finer details of rod building.
In 2009 I moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico to chase the mountains, streams, and trout of the Southern Rockies. After a few years of working as fly fishing guide for The Reel Life I opened Flat Creek Rods in 2011 to devote my time to crafting custom fly rods. My attention to detail and quality are second to none. Time on the water has given me the expert knowledge to help you select the best blank and components. From a 7’ 3 weight glass to a 12 weight blue water rod, Flat Creek Rods can build that fly rod of a lifetime.
